How To Effectively Clean Your Drain

There’s nothing quite as frustrating as a clogged drain! It brings everything to a standstill, whether in the kitchen or the bathroom. Nothing gets accomplished until it is dealt with. It can mean dirty dishes that aren’t washed, laundry that doesn’t get done and showers that can’t be taken. What’s more, it can create an awful smell that can waft throughout your home.

Doing The Same Old Thing

Our very first reaction under this trying circumstance is to go out and buy a bottle of drain opener. We’ve all seen the commercials about how they work. You pour the product down the drain, it latches on to the offensive clog and carries it away in a matter of minutes. Why, it’s almost like magic!

You might also have heard about the baking soda and vinegar home remedy. The chemical reaction that happens between these two substances is suppose to loosen clogs enough to send them rocketing out the other end of your drain pipe. Well, it works for making science project volcanoes, so why not?

While these remedies might work for some clogs, it’s not likely that it will work in every situation.

But did you ever wonder why?

Allow Us To Explain

While the baking soda and vinegar theory does in fact work sometimes, there are other things that have to be done in correlation. The reaction between these two creates a gaseous force that does exert some pressure. However, in the case of a sink, you have to make sure the other side is sealed well, and then seal the drain into which you’re pouring the vinegar. Otherwise, the pressure will simply go down through one side of the sink and back up the other. The clog won’t be affected in such case.

All drain opening substances use one of three different methods: caustic solutions, oxidizing solutions and acidic solutions. Each of these creates a different type of chemical reaction and works to release clogs that can be dissolved. If the clog is caused by something else, it simply won’t work in the way it was intended to work, leaving your disappointed once again.

These drain openers can also cause damage to your pipes, and that’s something you really don’t want to deal with prematurely. It is just not worth it to destroy your pipes in an effort to simply clear away a clog. In many cases, the chemical makeup of the commercial drain cleaning product can eat away at the inside of your pipes, causing many problems. And while they may not eat right through and cause holes, it can weaken the integrity of your pipes. This means if something out of the ordinary happens, such as having your pipes to freeze in the winter, they can break all together, leaving you with an expensive leak and possibly, a great deal of damage.
